Last of the Season

Oddly enough, here in the sunny south, our camping seasons starts about September, and if you are really brave, you can make it through the end of May.

We decided to make our last camping trip this past weekend.  And, of course, we went to the beach, because that is where you go camping, in the south, at the "end of the season."  We all thought it would be a good way to end our school year.  Even though none of us are really stopping for the summer.

Anyway, the three families headed out Friday morning for some fun in the sun!  We went to Ft. Pickens National Park.  It is a huge campground on an island not far from Pensacola.  It is a site of an old historical fort.  More about that later.

We got to the site by early afternoon.  Because of Hurricane Ivan about 5-6 years ago, the whole look of the island has changed.  Sand dunes moved and trees destroyed.  And not much shade at our campsite.  Thankfully we were not camping just to hang out at the campsite.  The beach was within walking distance and we could hear the waves when we walked the dog.  It was hot but we could also get the breeze from the water.

Once we all got settled in, we hit the beach for a relaxing afternoon.  I wish I would have got more pictures from that afternoon, but apparently I forgot my camera.  Between all three families we got tons of pictures of the rest of the weekend.

We stayed at the beach until well into evening.  Then we went back to our site, had brats for dinner, and hung out with our friends.

More tomorrow about the historical sites, white sandy beaches just like sugar and water so clear that we could always see the bottom and all the sea-life that the gulf has to offer . . .
