Science Today

As we were sitting down to school this morning, Nature Girl saw this big bird on the trampoline. At least it looked pretty big from where we were sitting We have a red tail hawk that frequents our backyard and he IS huge. Anyway, she wanted to know what this other bird was.

A little while later, while we were doing school, that same bird perched on daddy's lawn mower right outside of our back porch and we were able to get a closer look. It turned out to be a mockingbird with its chest all puffed out. So, we began to speculate why he/she was so "puffed up." First, maybe it was a female about to lay an egg. Then, maybe a male trying to attract a female.

That led us to the computer to find out when mockingbirds lay eggs and when their mating season is. We found out that Northern Mockingbirds mate in early February - hmmmm. Then daddy went on to read that mockingbirds get their name because they copy or mock the sounds of other birds or insects to attract them.

Science done for today. . .
